Starting from Syabrubensi, a one day drive from Kathmandu, we start our trek through the narrow Langtang Valley al the way to the Buddhistic village of Kyangin. As you start this trip at an altitude of 1300m, you will trek through different climate zones, offering a wide variety of flora and fauna while training and getting used to higher altitudes. The green, narrow Langtang Valley is famous for its Langur monkeys and beautiful trails. From Langtang village the valley suddenly becomes wider and the alpine landscape becomes wilder.
After reaching Gyangin, which is famous for its Buddhist Gompa, we head for Yala Peak (5500m). Although this peak is not the most difficult climb, it’s a great way to practice our skills and to acclimatize properly before heading to Naya Kanga. After a short break in Kyangin, we establish a base camp just below the crest of the Ganja La (4510m), from where we climb to a high camp below one of Naya Kanga’s impressive glaciers. From here you will make your summit bid across a steep ridge that leads to the real summit. From the summit you will be rewarded with a 360 degrees view on many giant Himalayan peaks, like: Langtang Lirung (7246m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Penthang Karpo Ri (6830m) and Shishapangma (8027m) in Tibet. After this great climb we will continue our trek across the glaciated Ganja La and descent through remote and wild areas to the warm and beautiful Helambu valley. This is a pleasant, alternative way to exit Langtang Valley and to explore a bit more of areas closer to Kathmandu. A short drive from Melamchi Pul Bazar brings you back in Kathmandu.

We have rated this Naya Kanga Expedition with CO-E2. This means that it's a medium to streneous trip while the climbing sections are easy (facile) to a bit difficult (difficile). Have a look at a general description of these codes! Below we'll try to describe the specific difficulties of this trip.
Trekking across Ganja La and climbing Yala Peak & Naya Kanga
The trekking part in this expedition does not require specific experience or skills. You just should feel comfortable walking on steep, rocky, slippery and unstable terrain. Crossing Ganja La involves some short, but steep rock & snow sections with an angle of 30 to 40 degrees. Yala Peak includes climbing on 30 degrees snow/ice. Naya Kanga is a more technical climb than most other trekking peaks in Nepal. The ascent and descent involves some short, but steep rock, snow & ice sections with an angle of 45 degrees. The summit ridge is steep, narrow and exposed. To ensure safety, ropes will be fixed at all difficult sections. You should feel comfortable with basic rock and alpine climbing techniques in winter conditions. This includes the following techniques: using ice axe and crampons, abseiling.
In general...
You should feel comfortable with basic rock and alpine climbing techniques in winter conditions. This includes the following techniques: using ice axe and crampons, abseiling. This expedition is open for trekkers/climbers with basic mountaineering experience or fit and keen trekkers who like to gain mountaineering experience at higher altitudes. It's an advantage if you have previous experience in winter camping and basic rock and alpine climbing techniques, although this is not mandatory. Basic alpine climbing training is built into the trips itinerary. As you’re part of a group during difficult situations and demanding activities, you must have experience in working and living in and with a group of people who share the same, common goal. An easy going, flexible attitude is a must.
After booking we will send you a final, detailed clothes & equipment list with all the required clothes and (climbing) equipment that you need for this trip. To get a really good idea what you will get from us, you may download an example equipment list.
An indication of best seasons to make this trip (stable weather and clear views)
Indication of temperatures: (depending on weather conditions)
Rain may be expected in the lower areas of the Langtang Valley, below Gyangin and in Helambu. If you like to try to avoid a late monsoon, you should start this trip from half October. Normally, the weather will be more stable by then. However, mountain storms and fog are unpredictable and can arise quickly, changing trekking & climbing conditions dramatically. Rain, snow and strong winds are always possible.
